Scouts build bird houses, make and race pinewood derby cars, hide and find geocaches, make snow shelters, participate in donation drives, carve pumpkins and build social, presentation and sales skills. And that was just during covid!
Unlike other extra activities your children participate in, Scouting is designed to be easy and flexible. Come when you can. Do what you want. It's a fun experience that is scientifically proven to teach skills and character.
Your entire family is always welcome at all of our meetings (inside meetings with a face mask), activities and events even if siblings aren't Scouts (we provide free childcare at Pack meetings). Participate, volunteer, learn a few things and have fun.
Parent Volunteering is Part of the "Cost" to Join
Pack 80 is 100% volunteer and asks all parents to commit to either:
one of our 20 annual leadership positions
den leader position
or volunteering for several of the dozens of ad-hoc opportunities throughout the year (camp, pinewood derby, etc).
+National Scouts BSA Sign Up Fees
During online registration and checkout, you’ll pay prorated National BSA annual dues for the first year (the fees are included in future Pack 80 renewal dues). In addition, BSA charges a one-time new member fee for all new scouts plus a small administrative fee.
+Regional Council and Local Pack 80 Dues
Pack 80 Dues are $250 with opportunities to reduce this to $0 based on your fundraising efforts (see below). Our dues now include a NEW fee required by our Regional Council. The current Pack 80 Treasurer will email you an invoice at the end of Popcorn Sales, October-November, with your amount and instructions to pay via Venmo. New families who register online will be invoiced a discounted amount from Pack 80 reflecting the national dues already paid during registration. (see our financials page to understand where your dues are spent)
Sell Popcorn, Earn Your Dues!
Individual Scouts selling $650 to $999 in popcorn will be required to pay dues of $190. Any Scout selling more than $1,000 in popcorn will have zero dues. Nada. Scouting is free this year. (and that's on top of all the great incentives and prizes they can earn selling popcorn).
Need Scholarships Available
The Pack offers scholarships for those with financial need. We only ask that you also sell at least $300 in popcorn. Please contact our Treasurer directly for more information.
Uniform
Expect to spend $25-$75 per Scout (older Scouts require more) for a uniform and handbook. Donated uniforms are also available.
Within a few days after your registration, your Scout's profile will be active in Scoutbook, our parent-leader tool for keeping track of scout things. Once your Scoutbook account is live, and prior to the end of September, your Scout will be placed in an existing Den or a new Den may need to be created. We assign dens after our recruiting drive, as we may need to create new dens to accomodate interest.
All of our Pack and Den activities are managed and published within Scoutbook, our online platform for keep track of things. Pack wide events are also available on the calendar on home page. Den meeting days, times and locations vary based on the needs of each den. You should expect at least two den activities per month, either as outings or meetings. Pack meetings typically take place once a month, on the first Thursday evening, September through May with adhoc activities. Summer plans are less formal and provide opportunities to get outdoors.
For Kindergarten (Lion) and 1st Grade (Tiger) scouts parents are required to accompany their Scout. For other ranks parent attendance is not required but may be requested by Den or Pack leaders.
